Taking Care of the Essentials
We recommend completing these tasks within the first seven days of your family member’s passing.

Obtain a Death Certificate
Request multiple certified copies from the funeral director or your local Vital Records office. Having these on hand will make it easier to close accounts and claim any benefits you’re entitled to during this difficult time.

Locate the Will and Trust
Look for the original documents to identify the executor, who will help guide the estate through this process. If there is no will, know that the local probate court will appoint someone to assist with these responsibilities.

Notify the Social Security Administration (SSA)
Call 1-800-772-1213 to report the death. This step will stop monthly payments and allow you to apply for the $255 one-time death benefit for surviving spouses. If a payment arrives in the month of death, it may need to be returned—don’t worry, the SSA can walk you through what’s required.

Contact their Employer
If your family member was working, reach out to their employer’s Human Resources department. They can help you claim any final paychecks, life insurance, or retirement plan benefits that may be available.
If your family member had a private retirement pension, contact the retirement association.
